STANDARD ISSUE

Brett Lockhard

At its opening, the Standard in New York appeared a kind of hotel supernova. With its Meatpacking District location, throwback-visionary architecture, and models perched at every doorway, it quickly became the place European tourists might collapse on a banquette surrounded by bags from La Perla and Stella McCartney and lazily order a bottle of Malbec while deciding what to do next. It wasn’t long before rich people were flocking there to fuck against the hotel’s lofty windows that rose above the newly opened High Line, an elevated park running along the river. New York magazine wrote about groups of suburban moms huddled at the park’s lower reaches, craning to take in the tower of fetish—in each window a different transgression, sex acts stacked one on top of another like a lubricious Lego installation.

In Anton’s view the whole thing at first seemed goofily sanitized—the sex in these rooms more trapped than exposed, the hotel more a reminder of what New York had lost than regained. Having once been a go-go dancer in a gritty East Village bar, it was easy for the present day advertising executive to lament the passing of a filthier time. But a few years after the hotel’s arrival, Anton realized he had merely been grasping at relics of his former self—the stud who had fucked guys bareback on deserted streets near the water and organized orgies in the basements of bars.

When ordering his morning latte, he still felt a familiar surge in his pants as he thought back to the 24-year-old barista who had once wrapped his perfect lips around Anton’s cock in the shop’s half-exposed storage room. He remembered watching through the interior window separating them from the main seating area as an impatient line of morning caffeine seekers grew out the door. Just as he was about to blow a thick, creamy load in the young stud’s throat, the shop’s owner walked through the front door and headed straight toward them.

But despite the thrill, the prospect of getting caught with his cock in the barista’s mouth at the neighborhood coffee shop seemed at odds with the rest of Anton’s character. Now in his early thirties, he wore thousand dollar suits and shopped for designer groceries. He had friends with Baby Björns and an apartment in a doorman building in tony West Chelsea. It was time, he thought, to grow up and accept what the city—no, what he—had become. After all, despite the degree to which he had fought it, Anton was now the establishment.

Even with this mature intention in mind, it alarmed Anton when, upon meeting Gunnar at his much-anticipated gallery opening, his first impulse hadn’t been to pin the artist against the wall. There was a gentleness to Gunnar, something human and edifying in his smile. This is not to say that the promising personality blinded Anton to the potential wonders of his body. His torso a perfect V growing from a 31-inch waist, he had shoulders that spread like wings, suggestive of his mythical Nordic ancestry, and substantial forearms that burst from his rolled-up flannel.
